Ghosts vs. Spirits

The terms "ghost" and "spirit" are used so interchangeably that there seems to be no discernable difference between the two.  However, these phenomena each have their own characteristics that uniquely distinguish one from the other.

Ghosts are traditionally accepted as the source behind a haunting.  They were at one time living human beings (or animals), who upon death became somehow attached to a location or a specific object.  Ghosts are essentially trapped in limbo, doomed to haunt their assigned surroundings for all eternity.  That is, until they are ready to move on or can be released through a cleansing ritual or similar means.  So where do they go from there, you might ask?  That would depend on your belief system, but for the purpose of this blog we'll just say "into the Light".

Spirits, on the other hand, have more of a religious connotation.  They come from the Light, and just to visit, not to haunt.  When someone sees a vision of a loved one after (s)he has passed, that is likely the loved one's spirit saying goodbye.  Or perhaps the loved one has long since passed, but wants to say hello in the midst of a major life event, just to show that (s)he is watching.  This leads some to believe that the spirits of our loved ones never really leave us, that they follow us in our daily lives and just watch from the sidelines.  While this may bring comfort to some, to others it may leave a sense of uneasiness.  It is a bit more reassuring to believe that spirits have some sense of boundaries, watching passively from afar and only visiting when needed.  They can also be summoned or attracted by a Medium, which I will touch upon at a later time.

Of course, our loved ones can return as ghosts, as well.  It all depends on the circumstances by which they died and whether or not they have unfinished business on earth.

It is said that energy never dies, but only transforms.  And since all living things are made up of energy, this energy must go somewhere at the moment of death.  So, if we apply this theory to the concept of ghosts and spirits, it's reasonable to assume that energy carries one's consciousness even after death.  Usually this energy moves into the Light, but sometimes its will to stay is too strong or it gets trapped along the way.  In other words, ghosts and spirits must be real things that are also made up of energy.  The implications of this, if true, are unimaginable.

There is still much we don't understand about the energy that surrounds us, but I believe this is the key to unlocking the truth behind life after death and other paranormal phenomena.  If society would only take paranormal research more seriously, there's no telling what we might find on the other side.
